Floridian Roulette
Mary Holly, 53, a caretaker for the elderly, wanted to gamble. She went into a Coconut Creek, Fla., casino for a couple of hours — and left Belle Sapstein, who has dementia, alone in her car, with nothing to eat or drink, until another casino visitor noticed her and called police. Although an officer found that Sapstein showed no indications of distress, the 95-year-old was hospitalized until at least the next day. Holly, who was already wanted on two warrants — one for exploitation of an elderly person — was charged with neglect of an elderly person. A judge banned her from serving as a caretaker while the charge is pending.
