Gotta Catch ’Em at Something

The government of Canada is auctioning off a “forfeited item”: a “super rare” collectable 2016 Pokémon 20th Anniversary card, featuring Pikachu. It comes sealed and graded. The auction is being held on its online surplus property site, which usually has more mundane items such as older vehicles, computers, and furniture. They posted a link to their “rare find” on social media, which has quickly resulted in bids. The minimum price was C$375, but hit C$1,750 (US$1,165) over the weekend. Asked how the government came to possess the card, a spokeswoman replied that Government of Canada Surplus “has no additional information regarding the forfeit of the items.” (RC/Ottawa Citizen) ...Confiscated as counterfeit, so the bidders will have many more chances to bid on it in the coming years.
Story Note: A fury of last-minute bidding ended the auction at C$6,200 (US$4,425). At the time, the same card, also graded and sealed, was selling for as little as US$329 on eBay.
