Intimidation Tactic
Fourteen years ago, Kirk Grady sold a vacant lot in Hunt County, Texas. The county has sued him in Travis County, saying Grady committed “improper waste disposal” — a pile of wood on the property. The county claims the wood was contaminated and is demanding fines for this supposed transgression: $2 billion. Understandably, Grady, who only owned the lot for about three years, is outraged. The county doesn’t actually expect to get that much, says Hunt County Civil Attorney Daniel Ray: “The incentive is to settle the case,” he said. Their strong-arm strategy is not likely to work anytime soon: Grady has sued the county in federal court.
