Iron Poor Blood
Japan’s Railway Technical Research Institute is testing a new system to reduce collisions with deer on tracks. The test train has a speaker mounted on the front that plays 3 seconds of the sound of a deer snorting, then 20 seconds of a dog barking. The former attracts the attention of nearby deer, the researchers say, and the latter scares the deer away. They say the deer are attracted to the tracks to lick up iron filings left by the wheels on the tracks, and the previous trial to scare the deer away — spraying lion poop on the tracks — didn’t work because rain just washed it away.
