Keep Your Mittens To Yourself

“Hands off, Cheeseheads!” editorialized the Detroit Free Press in a story published on April 13, after learning that residents of Wisconsin had started a petition to rename Lake Michigan to Lake Wisconsin. The Michigan newspaper declared “it’s wartime” against the state on the other side of the lake, saying it had “dropped this give-us-your-lake bomb on Michigan.” But a few days later, the newspaper had to backpedal: it was pointed out that the name change proposal was published on April 1 — as an April Fool’s joke.
