Maybe They’d Never Seen One Before
Kaushal Khandar, a chess coach in Malaysia, was proud to have a student reach the National Scholastic Chess Championship in Putrajaya: a 12-year-old girl. But the unnamed girl was forced to withdraw because, Kaushal says, the tournament director “deemed my student’s dress to be ‘seductive’ and a ‘temptation from a certain angle far, far away’.” He posted a photo of the girl’s dress online: it fully covered her between her neck and her knees. Kaushal says the Chief Arbiter suggested the girl get a pair of slacks to wear for the next day, but by then it was 10:00 p.m., and stores were closed. “We demand a public apology,” Kaushal said, or “we shall have no choice but to resort to legal proceedings.” The tournament director, in turn, said he will be filing a police report on the incident.
