Customers “ask about avocados all day, every day,” sighs Lloyd Houghton, the owner of a nursery in Waikato, New Zealand. He already has more than 200 orders for avocado tree saplings that he can’t fill, and local farmers can’t keep up with demand for the fruit, which has sent supermarket prices to as much as NZ$5 (US$3.30) each. That, in turn, has led to thefts from orchards, and a booming black market. Home growers have to be patient: it takes 3-5 years before a tree sapling grows enough to bear fruit.
