City Hall in Norfolk, Va., now has free WiFi Internet access for visitors: handy when waiting in long lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles, for instance. Getting a public network up was one of the first initiatives of the city’s new mayor, Kenny Alexander. Dozens of signs all over the building direct citizens to look for the network’s distinctive name: “CON-PUBLIC”. That’s City Of Norfolk Public, notes the city’s chief information officer, Steven DeBerry. But yes, he understands the “optics” of the name has a bad connotation, and promises it will be changed.
