In a certain remote part of Bayan-Olgii, Mongolia, people believe that eating the raw kidney and flesh of a marmot is good for them. A local couple ate some, but they didn’t get the promised good health: the rodent gave them bubonic plague, and they died. A quarantine was imposed, and 118 people, including European and Korean tourists, were given antibiotics because they’d been exposed to the marmot eaters.
