Once Bitten, Twice Shy
A woman in Weld County, Colo., found a baby raccoon on her property that she figured was “abandoned by her mother,” and brought it inside to care for it. Her family and friends found the animal friendly, and would hold it and let it lick them. “It is very important that people not touch or go near wild animals,” said the director of the county’s health department, Mark Wallace. Especially in this case: the raccoon is rabid, and now the woman and 20 others need medical treatment for the fatal-unless-quickly-treated disease.
