Out Is Out
Penn State University looked around its campus — where one of its football players got an injury in spring training last year that kept him off the field through December — and decided there were three organizations whose safety risks could not be tolerated. The Nittany Divers SCUBA Club, the Nittany Grotto Caving Club, and the 98 year old Penn State Outing Club were ordered to cease and desist taking students on outdoor trips. University spokeswoman Lisa Powers said the decision resulted from a “proactive risk assessment,” not from anyone actually getting hurt on the trips. The Outing Club sometimes goes to places so remote they don’t have very good cellphone service, she noted.
