Outflanked

With hundreds of homes consumed by lava streaming out of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, one landowner refuses to flee. Dale Altman, 66, and his grandson grow medical marijuana on 5 acres on Halekamahina Hill. It’s worth $100,000, he says, and it’s apparently not ready to harvest. “That’s why we didn’t leave. It’s taken a lot of work.” His property is cut off from road access by lava, but he figures he’s safe since he’s on a hill, and lava flows downhill. “We’re not stupid,” Altman said. “We thought this out.” (RC/Reuters) ...Did you consider that fires set by lava spread fastest uphill?
