John Bowman, 45, of Arvada, Colo., admits he made a pipe bomb and blew up a curbside mailbox. He wasn’t trying to hurt anyone, or invoke anarchy. Rather, he says, he wanted to impress his girlfriend: “She wanted to hear a ‘loud boom’,” he told investigators. He faces federal charges of attempting to maliciously damage or destroy property used in interstate commerce, and faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
