Sermon, Interrupted

Pastor David Creek was just starting his sermon at the Belleview (Fla.) Church of Christ. The subject: the mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nev. As he spoke, sounds of gunfire rang out nearby — including apparent machine-gun fire. “Everyone thought it was going down,” Creek said. “One person sped away in their car, thinking their life was in danger.” The gunfire, it turns out, was part of an annual World War II reenactment by the First Florida chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association. Chapter president David Thomas said the annual event is intended to teach World War II history interactively instead of in a museum setting. The event includes tanks and .50- and .30-caliber machine guns, all firing blanks. “We figured some people might be startled,” Thomas said, even though the event was announced to local law enforcement and media. Creek said he’s “grateful for veterans,” but doesn’t understand the need to reenact war. “Why not reenact love?” he asked. (MS/Gainesville Sun) ...Well, close: they were reenacting conquering all.
