In an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer first broadcast in 1999, a character copies a design out of a book onto the floor of a Halloween haunted house. It’s interpreted as the “mark of Gachnar,” which could summon a “fear demon.” But the Irish text accompanying the symbol in the book — the text Giles translates as explaining how to cancel the spell — turns out to have a more mundane meaning in real life. It’s a tale of a bus route scheduled to open in Dublin, bringing fears of traffic congestion. A Twitter user posted about it with a screenshot showing the text in the book.
