That’s Some Pig

Molly, a 3-year-old Vietnamese potbelly pig, came into the British Columbia, Canada, SPCA following an animal cruelty investigation, and was adopted by a local family. “So there’s quite a thorough adoption matching and discussion and counseling and that kind of thing,” said B.C. SPCA spokeswoman Lorie Chortyk. “So this was the whole focus of the adoption counseling. They said, ‘Yes, this was going to be a pet, going to live on a farm, this is what we’re doing. They actually, put in writing that, ‘No, I will never use this animal for food.’” But fellow pot-bellied pig owner Brandee McKee said the owners realized they couldn’t take care of the animal. McKee discovered that when she saw photos and videos on Snapchat of the family seasoning and preparing Molly ...for dinner. “The reality is, it’s not illegal to kill your own animal in Canada,” Chortyk said. “Someone can take a gun and shoot their dog in the head and as long as the dog dies instantly, unfortunately there’s no law against that.” The SPCA did go out to make sure Molly was humanely killed, and the family is now banned from adopting any more pets from the SPCA. (MS/CTV, Global News Canada) ...Next time, adopt a cow.
