The Hell You Say

If an American public school allows religious clubs and such on campus, they have to allow all religions who want to have a club to have a presence. That’s where the After School Satan Club comes in — and they did that for a school in Pennsylvania’s Saucon Valley School District. But Superintendent Jaime Vlasaty kept an eye out for a reason to make an exception, and found it: word that the club, which does no religious (or anti-religious) indoctrination whatever, was coming in created such an uproar in town, including an anonymous threat (ah hah!), Vlastay declared that the “District has been significantly impacted and it has caused unequivocal disruption to the District’s daily operations,” thus violating School Board Policy 707, and withdrew permission. And the town in the district that was in such an uproar? Hellertown. (RC/WFMZ Allentown) ...So because the Satanists were well mannered and the Christians weren’t, the Satanists must be banned. Got it!

Story Update: For an earlier story on the subject, see “Acronimble” in Volume 28. In this case, a judge didn’t buy the school district’s excuse to bar the club. The district agreed to pay a $200,000 settlement, and abide by the requirement to treat all religions equally when it comes to access to school property, and agree not to retaliate against any parents, students, or other participants in the club.

Not surprisingly, the ASSC appeared in True again: see “Here We Go Again” in Volume 30.
