The Lies People Tell Themselves
Donny Pauling Jr, 41, of Yuba City, Calif., admits he spent nine years in the business of making adult entertainment — but sold off his company and “turned my life over to God,” becoming a Christian pastor who travels from church to church preaching against consuming such adult entertainment. But Pauling has been arrested after a 16-year-old girl came forward to say he had been having sex with her regularly since she was 13. She says that Pauling “told her he was not like other child molesters because he actually loved her.” Then it gets weird: a captain in the local sheriff’s office was arrested after allegedly procuring a young girl for Pauling to have sex with, while the captain watched and played with himself. The girl Lewis McElfresh Jr, 57, recruited is one of his own relatives. Investigators say Pauling may have targeted other young girls. Both Pauling and McElfresh, who was the captain of the Sutter County Jail while it was housing Pauling, deny the charges, and both have now been moved to separate jails outside Sutter County to avoid conflicts of interest. Pauling reportedly told the 16-year-old that if she went to law enforcement, she should tell him first so he could kill himself.
