The Right Thing

Buffalo, N.Y., college student Andrew Sipowicz, 21, was upset when he went out to his parked car and found someone had damaged it — in a hit and run — until he found the note under the wiper, which he posted to Twitter. “If your wondering what happen to your car,” the note in a neat but clearly childish hand said, “Bus: 449 hit your car.” School bus 449 that is, which “stops here every day to drop me off.” The sixth-grader who wrote the note, later identified as Ziarra Griffin, 11, added a drawing of the bus, and said “She made a dent and I saw what happened. Sorry.” The driver was fired, and the bus company promised to pay for repairs. The note almost didn’t make it to Sipowicz’s car: the girl’s mother was afraid the owner might think she had hit his car, but Ziarra told her, “Mom! It’s the right thing to do!” Sipowicz’s tweet has 1.2 million “Likes” and attracted huge media attention, but the “GoFundMe” page put up by Tocarra Lewis, the mother, asking for a staggering $60,000 because “My 6th Grader Left the Note,” is a flop: after 15 days only two people had contributed a total of $35.
