Who Watches the Watchers
This summer, the staff at a Gosport, Hampshire, England, pub ejected the newly inaugurated Mayor, Wayne Ronayne, and mayoress Paula Carter, who was with him. The couple allegedly warned that they could have that pub — and another that wouldn’t admit her — closed. Ronayne was banned by the local Pub Watch network from all area pubs, and he resigned as mayor, but he is still on the local council. Now council leader Mark Hook has given him a new job — on the board that controls pub licensing. “It’s not for Pub Watch to determine who I can or can’t have on the licensing board,” Hook says. “Quite frankly we’ve got a borough to run.” (AC/Portsmouth News) ...And they’ve got pubs to run. For now.Story Note: See “Thirsty Work” earlier in this volume.
