As If Death Row Weren’t Bad Enough

Almost 20 years ago, an Ohio judge condemned convicted murderer David Braden to die — and to pay $2,127.50 in court costs. He’s still alive, and he still owes $1,600. As an inmate, he only earns $16 per month, and — apparently because of his debt — he’s only allowed to keep $25 in his prison account. New shoes cost at least $27.95 on death row, according to the ACLU — though somehow, Braden does now have shoes. Out of the $25, Braden has to pay for things like toiletries and doctors’ co-pays, court papers say. Braden is seeking to have his court costs modified under a 2013 law, and the Ohio Supreme Court has accepted the case.
