When Stephen Hoggan, 49, robbed a liquor store in Glasgow, Scotland, at knife-point, he managed to get 37 pounds (US$48) from the till — but the clerk managed to whack Hoggan with a mop as he fled. The next day, Hoggan went to a different store of the same chain, where he again demanded money from the till. Clerk Cheryl Bradley recognized him as a regular. “Ms Bradley told the accused he was getting ‘f--- all’ and began hitting him with the mop she was using to clean the floor,” the prosecutor told Lord Justice Clerk Lady Dorrian. Hoggan still managed to grab two bottles of booze off the shelf as he ran. At a third shop in the same chain — the One O One off-licence — he got more booze, and some cigarettes. Lady Dorrian didn’t have a mop, but she still cleaned Hoggan’s clock: she sentenced him to five years and three months in jail. (RC/Glasgow Evening Times) ...The third clerk, meanwhile, was sacked for not having a mop handy.Original Publication Date: 03 September 2017
