Bulled Over

Police went to a Penn Township, Pa., field after someone spotted a suspicious car parked far from the road. David B. Light gave himself up, but Gregory A. Longenecker ran. The state police sent a chopper, but the suspect evaded it, secreting himself in thick brush. So a Pennsylvania Game Commission employee, with a trooper beside him, went hunting for Longenecker in a bulldozer. When they got down from the heavy machine, they located Longenecker — underneath the bulldozer. Light was charged with trespassing, conspiracy, and (because weed was growing in the field) possession with intent to deliver. Longenecker was not charged: he’s dead. An investigation was launched, but authorities didn’t wait for results before saying Longenecker’s death appeared to be accidental. A state police spokesman even claimed that troopers weren’t pursuing the man, and thus his death wasn’t caused by a pursuit.
