Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities has announced a new find: scores of mummified cats and cat statues. They were in a newly found, 4,500 year old tomb in Saqqara. Cats were very popular in ancient Egypt, says Antonietta Catanzariti of the Smithsonian Institution, and curator of its exhibit on Egyptian cats. They weren’t worshiped, she says, but they were considered divine. “In the 1890s, people from England went to Egypt and they collected all these [cat] mummies,” she says. “One cargo was 180,000 of them.” (RC/NPR) ...Cat amusements “going viral” — a thing for 45 centuries.
