Clive Palmer, founder of the United Australia Party, sent out a very clear message: “United Australia Party will ban unsolicited political text messages which Labor & Liberal have allowed.” That message was sent to voters throughout Australia — as an unsolicited text message. The messages didn’t include any options to opt out, but included a link to a website that simply said, “Authorised by S. Sokolova, United Australia Party, Brisbane.” Palmer defended his use of unsolicited text messages since it’s “entirely legal” under Australia’s privacy act.
