Go Indirectly to Jail

Allen Lewis was supposed to be on his way from the Greenup County, Ky., jail, where he’d served his sentence, to the Rowan County jail, where he was to be kept next, in the hands of an officer from Morgan County, where he had charges pending. But Lewis apparently had other ideas. Claiming his handcuffs were causing him pain, he got the officer to stop and adjust them — providing, as Greenup jailer Mike Worthington tells the story, the occasion for Lewis to get away. Officials tried to track him, even using a dog. But Lewis reached a highway and tried to hitchhike; the driver who stopped for him was a Morehead State University cop. The officer observed that Lewis was still wearing the handcuffs, albeit only on one wrist. Lewis “thought he was getting a ride,” Worthington said, “and he did” — to jail, with yet another charge to deal with: escape.
