Look! Up in the Sky!

An explosion in the Bronx, the northernmost borough of New York, N.Y., was followed by a blinding “unnatural, fluorescent shade of blue,” one witness said. “We thought it was a U.F.O.,” said another. But, electric utility Con Edison assured nervous residents, it was just a transformer that exploded, though the resulting power surge lasted long enough that there was plenty of time to whip out a cell phone and take video or photos. It “was spectacular,” said the commanding officer of NYPD’s 114th Precinct, Deputy Inspector Osvaldo Nuñez. “You could see it from the precinct, and the precinct is about a half mile away.
