Coastguard crews in Auckland, New Zealand, responded to a report of an explosion on a boat just off Motuihe Island. The boat owner “smelt gas and confirmed that there was gas by lighting a match. Which is a very tried and true method of finding gas,” said paramedic Chris Deacon. “Unfortunately, it is not a very good method.” Amazingly, the man, in his 60s, suffered only superficial injuries. The Coastguard used the opportunity to remind boaters to use safer methods to check their fuel supplies, “and apply common sense.” (RC/Otago Daily Times) ...If he had any, would they have had to tell him to use it?Original Publication Date: 13 January 2019
