Ignorance of the Law Is a Proper Excuse (If)
For years, certain very special drivers in New Orleans, La., have been opting not to pay the tickets they’ve gotten from traffic cameras. Four hundred of their special vehicles have amassed half a million dollars in fines. Now the fines are being forgiven — but the city says it will enforce new fines against these special people going forward, even deducting the charges from their departments’ budgets if need be. Yes, you guessed it: the scofflaws are city employees, many of them police officers. A city official explained the amnesty by saying the rules had not been clear.
