Jewel Burgle Bungler Jailed
Colin Ayers and Mervin Chong didn’t want their faces spotted, so they put on masks. And balaclavas. And hoodies. No helmets, though; they wouldn’t fit over all the other stuff. Nevertheless, they rode their moped around the jewelry store they wanted to plunder — Ayres holding a pickax with his legs. All this made them so conspicuous, four Ramsgate, England, shoppers called the police. When the authorities arrived, Ayers, 28, drove the moped into a lamp pole, making their capture easy. Chong was given a two-year sentence. Ayers’ lawyer asked the judge not to punish him “for his stupidity,” but the judge sent the bungler to prison for two years too — plus a month for having to be arrested again instead of showing up to be sentenced.
