Karaoke is a recreational activity, Salt Lake City, Utah, businessman Brody Horton says. But the state’s Department of Alcoholic Control Commission wants a legal analysis to see whether that’s so. It matters because if karaoke is a recreational activity, Heart and Seoul Karaoke, which Horton co owns, can get a beer license. And, Horton said, “that’s the only one that will allow us to be family friendly and serve alcohol.” But commission chair John Nielsen said a recreational activity must “be substantially similar to all these other activities that are enumerated in the statute.” The statute lists golf and bowling, and an axe throwing business has already been licensed. “Apparently,” said Horton, “beer in one hand, axe in the other is more appropriate than a microphone.” (AC/KTSU Salt Lake City) ...An axe and “Sweet Caroline” can both do a lot of damage in the wrong hands.
