“I must have seen 11 firetrucks race down the road,” said a resident of Jacksonville, Fla.; multiple residents called 911 after hearing a series of explosions at a Florida Power & Light power plant. Police cars and ambulances followed. FPL officials swear they gave the media, fire department, police, and mayor’s office prior notice of the planned explosions — they were destroying no-longer-used smokestacks and such at the now-defunct coal-fired plant. Police, fire, mayoral, and media officials all say they received no such notice. FPL said they even sent notices to the bomb squad and “adjacent property owners” to the plant, spokeswoman Sarah Gatewood said. By what method did they send the notices? “Via email,” she said.
