As chief counsel at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Seattle, Wash., it was part of Raphael A. Sanchez’s job to oversee deportation cases in several states. But the government says that over four years, he took “deported or otherwise excludable” aliens’ names and identifying information from agency databases, and stole their identities. Sanchez, 44, opened financial accounts in their names and then made payments to his own “businesses,” according to prosecutors. He made false ID documents at work, the government says, adding he even once claimed aliens on his taxes. Sanchez and the government made a plea deal for just one count each of wire fraud and identity theft, resulting in a four-year prison sentence and $190,000 in restitution.
