Keith Vallejo “is an extraordinarily good man,” said Judge Thomas Low in open court in Provo, Utah. There to hear him say it was Julia Kirby, one of the two relatives Low was sentencing the former Mormon bishop for sexually abusing. Kirby called the judge’s remarks “unacceptable and unprofessional.” Low did acknowledge that “great men sometimes do bad things”; he sentenced Vallejo to five years to life. Activist Turner Bitton said the comments amounted to blaming Vallejo’s victims.
