Outsmarted... Finally
Sixteen years ago, a 31-year-old woman was raped in Memphis, Tenn.; police at the time were unable to solve the case. They did, however, recover a set of dentures the rapist left at the crime scene. The dentures sat in a police evidence locker until last year, when they were finally sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for analysis. Sure enough, a partial DNA profile was recovered leading to Thomas Maupin, 67. The dentures were prison-made while Maupin was serving time in Washington in the murder of a 6-year-old girl. Crime lab techs also spotted another clue on the dentures: Maupin’s name printed right on them. In a plea agreement, Maupin pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
