The city council of Peachtree, Ga., was set to consider authorizing the use of public money to fund lawsuits against anyone who “defamed” Peachtree’s elected officials, appointees, and employees, whether news media or citizens on social media. “I don’t think that someone should have the ability to come in and just say something,” said city manager Jon Rorie, perhaps even “that I committed a crime.” But when “confronted with a council chamber filled with upset residents,” news reports say, the council members voted unanimously to abandon the proposal, calling it “a mistake.” (AC/WAGA Atlanta, Atlanta Journal-Constitution) ...Sometimes listening to the people is wisdom enough.
