The law in Rhode Island requires school districts to balance their budgets. The School Committee in Tiverton adopted a $29.8 million budget, and most of a gap between funding and the budget was covered by a $340,000 increase from the state, and taking $459,502 from the district’s $4.4 million reserve fund. That still left them short, however — $1 short. Thus, “We are requesting the town provide $1 more as is required by state law,” said School Committee member Deborah Pallasch.
