Please Rise, or Else

The Philippine House of Representatives wants to make sure everyone respects the country’s national anthem. It has thus passed a bill requiring that everyone who hears the song not only stand and salute, but sing — “with fervor” — or face fines of up to 100,000 pesos (US$5,590). “Any act which casts contempt, dishonor, or ridicule upon the national anthem shall be penalized,” the bill says.
