With the recent legalization of medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, the local newspaper in Altoona announced that Dr. Liang Bartkowiak was the first — and so far only — doctor in Blair County to complete the training required to certify medical marijuana users. This led to an increase of callers to Bartkowiak’s practice, with many men and women calling indicating they wanted marijuana to deal with health concerns. “The people calling my office,” Dr. Bartkowiak said, “were not understanding that these are tinctures and vapors and balms in whatever form is targeted to the specific illness.” And then there was the issue of the gender of some of the callers. As the original article clearly said, Dr. Bartkowiak is an obstetrician and gynecologist. “I was shocked,” she said. “We’re fielding phone calls from male patients who want to schedule appointments.” The clinic only sees women.
