“We initially thought it might have been a high school prank,” says Ofc. Darryl Erkel of the Healdsburg, Calif., police. That didn’t pan out: “We have no leads at this point.” The crime: someone stole an art piece from the front of the city’s Community Center — a 21-foot, 800-pound, sculpture of a hammer, valued at $15,000. “They’d need at least a flatbed trailer with a winch, or about eight people,” says the artist, Doug Unkrey. But he was philosophical about the loss: “All artwork is temporary anyway,” he said.
