The poaching investigation took a month, said Master Officer J.D. White of the North Carolina Wildlife Commission. The suspect, Archie Lee Williams Jr., faces 73 charges. The species Williams is accused of taking is the Venus flytrap. It’s a felony in North Carolina to poach Venus flytraps, and a petition filed with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service seeks to classify the plant, whose natural habitat is all within 70 miles of Wilmington, N.C., as an endangered species.
