The duty belt, gun magazine case, and badge wallet represented a $60.87 loss to the Jacksonville, Fla., Sheriff’s Office. They brought Sgt. Richard Vercruysse $60.50, he admitted to supervisors, who then suspended him without pay. An internal-affairs report says a sheriff’s office official spotted the department-issued equipment on eBay. The suspension was not Vercruysse’s first: he’d previously been disciplined for “conduct unbecoming” and breaking the law (20 days), and for “failure of candor” and not meeting work standards (30 days). At 45 days, however, the latest suspension was nearly as long as the other two combined.
