Colorado’s massive snow load this year led to a huge number of avalanches, with multiple casualties. Now that the spring melt has started, the state Department of Transportation is warning of another related danger: hikers need to beware of “brightly colored” metal objects that “look like small torpedoes” — unexploded mortar shells. The DOT shot 1,500 howitzer rounds at the snowpack to safely trigger avalanches, but 22 of them failed to explode. “It’s an explosive, so you definitely don’t want to do anything to move it,” she says.
