No, the Metra wasn’t on fire. During an extreme cold spell, the flaming train tracks in and around Chicago, Ill., came from gas heaters next to the rails. They are just one of at least three systems Metra uses to keep the rails from shrinking so much in the cold that they pull apart where they’re supposed to connect.
