The Idaho Minefield

Wondering what it was, Canyon Mansfield, 14, picked up a device the federal government left behind his home near Pocatello, Idaho. It went off, showering him and his dog with powdered cyanide. The boy’s physical injuries were minor — thanks to the direction the wind blew the powder — but he had to watch Casey, his family’s yellow lab, suffocate from the poison. “Casey was between 80 and 90 pounds, and Canyon is 101 pounds,” said his mother, Theresa Mansfield. “It could have easily killed my son.” The “cyanide bomb” was planted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to kill coyotes. (AC/Idaho State Journal) ...His dog died. He could have. But at least he’s safe from coyotes.
