“I believe this is a miracle,” says a parishioner at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hobbs, N.M., after its statue of the Virgin Mary appeared to be shedding tears, bringing crowds of visitors. Not so fast, says the Diocese of Las Cruces: miracles have to be investigated. A sample of the liquid streaming down the statue’s face was collected. “We determined it was olive oil, a scented olive oil,” says Bishop Oscar Cantú, “something similar to the oil I bless and consecrate each year that we use for baptism, for confirmations and for ordination of the priests.” (RC/Las Cruces Sun News) ...Don’t worry: it may be olive oil, but it’s extra virgin.Original Publication Date: 29 July 2018
