“We’re Saying Merry Christmas Again”
Principal Jennifer Sinclair sent out a memo to Manchester Elementary teachers, “setting out our expectations as a public school who seeks to be inclusive and culturally sensitive to all of our students.” For example, it was OK for students at the Elkhorn, Neb., school to make gifts for their loved ones, but not to make Christmas ornaments: “This assumes that the family has a Christmas tree, which assumes they celebrate Christmas.” Santa didn’t belong on worksheets. She even banned candy canes, claiming their J shape stands for Jesus. In response, the religious conservative law firm Liberty Counsel demanded officials step in to protect teachers’ “academic freedom” to use “secular symbols like Christmas trees.” Although the firm said it “does not desire the removal of Principal Sinclair,” she’s now been suspended.
