Residents of Avon Lake, Ohio, started complaining about signs being stolen from city-owned lawns. The signs advertise businesses, events, and such, which require a city permit. Investigators eventually captured video of a sign being stolen, and identified John Hoelzl, 62, as the suspect. Police searched Hoelzl’s home and found over 500 signs. He pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property, but he had a reason: he said the signs were “distracting” to drivers.
