Bird-Brained Spies
Residents of Altinavya, Turkey, discovered a small kestrel falcon and grew suspicious when they saw a small, metallic ring around its leg with a stamp reading “24311 Tel Avivunia Israel”. They turned it in to local authorities, who identified the bird by the name “Israil Ajan” — Israeli Agent (or Spy). Government officials subjected the bird to medical exams and x-rays to ensure there were no hidden microchips. Putting metal bands on birds is a common ornithological practice to help scientists track migration. Officials cleared the bird of espionage, and decided to release it without pressing charges.
