House of (I.D.) Cards
In Palm Beach County, Fla., exotic dancers must purchase special I.D. cards from the county for $75. An employee noticed people were paying for the cards, but there were no records of the payments. She alerted her supervisor who launched an investigation. The Office of Inspector General determined administrative assistant Anita Pedemy, 54, had altered records of cash payments, and diverted at least $27,575 in card fees, plus $1,300 from the victim services fund, into her pocket. “This money was cash that was brought in,” Inspector General John Carey said. “We believe there could have been much more.” According to the report, Pedemy “indicated that her husband has been spending a lot of money at Home Depot.” Emails in her work account, meanwhile, refer to a house in France. To fix the problem, the county will no longer accept cash as payment for adult entertainment I.D. cards.
